India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Post Celebrations
On Tuesday morning citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Record-Breaking Pollution Levels
Multiple areas of Delhi showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended limit established by the WHO.
Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, equating to 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that covers the capital as winter approaches.
Yet recently, the recently formed city administration appealed to the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Reality
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, judges agreed to the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded air quality spiking around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.
Regional Effects
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the events.
Chronic Environmental Issue
Alarmingly severe readings of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
During celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Contamination Sources
The problem in the capital is resulting from a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in adjacent states of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is significant, according to various investigations.
The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.
The pollution is estimated to be causing 10,000 premature deaths annually in the city.
