Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such medications need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
