Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.
