On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
